Which photos should I choose for a custom painting?

In this post, we will try to explain in detail and precisely which photos are suitable for single-threaded paintings and which unfortunately would not produce the desired result.

The paintings look spectacular, so for special occasions you want to commission one for friends, family or, finally, for yourself. But what kind of pictures to choose for a personalised order? This is the question that many people ask when they want to order a One Seam painting according to their own preferences. More specifically, the question arises when we reject unsuitable photos.

Shadows and lighting

First of all, it should be remembered that floss is not a pencil and therefore has much more limited possibilities. When selecting photographs, attention should be paid to the shadows falling on the person’s face. If there are a large number of dark areas, it will not be appropriate to make a portrait from a single thread. The thread will turn the shadow area into a dark spot and the facial features of the person under the shadow will not be visible. Therefore, avoid any shadows on the face! Rather, choose bright, clear, well-lit photographs without any shadows.

Distance

This is another very important aspect. If the person’s face is far away in the picture, the quality of the picture will be compromised when you zoom in, so we can say with confidence that there will be no good result from producing such a picture. You should choose photographs in which the face is visible up close – the closer the better.

Brightness and contrast

This is no less important when creating a picture from a single thread. The greater the contrast, the more likely the final result of the painting will be excellent. Of course, before we turn a photo into an algorithm, we process it properly in Photoshop, but sometimes we have extremely low-quality photos that are no longer of any help. Therefore, try to choose bright and contrasty photos.

Photo of two people

There are times when a client wants two (or even more) portraits of two (or more) people in one painting. Yes, this is possible, but in this case attention should be paid not only to the above aspects, but also to the level of the faces in the picture. Imagine if two people are standing next to each other, but one is higher and the other lower. Unfortunately, however unfortunate, we cannot fit such a format into a circle and we will not be able to create the picture. If the people are on the same level, but one is close and the other far away, you may also be disappointed, as the face of the person closer will be sharp and the face of the person further away will be blurred. If the face is heavily blurred, the facial features may not be visible in the final result. We suggest a good practice where two people’s faces are at the same level, at the same distance and are hugging each other. In this case, it is likely that a single thread image will turn out perfectly.

Anything is possible

You might think that it’s impossible to find the right photos after reading these tips, but it’s REALLY not 😊 We all probably have good photos, and if we don’t, you can always take your own photo or ask a friend, girlfriend or relative to take yours.

Two more tips from us:

  • If you have had a photo shoot with a professional photographer, these photos will be suitable. Photographers are professionals in their field and will not leave any unnecessary shadows on your face, and the photos will be bright and high quality.
  • You can send us lots of photos. Please send a minimum of three, but if you send 20, it will be even better and we may select the one that is most suitable for the single thread image.
